Floyd Mayweather Announces Next Opponent for Superbowl Weekend Fight

Floyd Mayweather is arguably one of the greatest boxers of all time to have ever set foot in the ring. His undefeated record of 50-0 is a testament to his extraordinary boxing prowess which was honed with the help of his uncle Roger Mayweather and father, Floyd Mayweather Sr. Through his talent and determination he managed to become one of the highest athletes of all time. Moreover, he was so popular in his prime that his several fights still hold the record for most PPV sales of all time.

Ever since his retirement, he has been taking part in exhibition matches. Overall he has fought around 7 exhibition fights, his list of opponents includes Logan Paul, Mikuru Asakura, Aaron Chalmers, etc. However, one fighter managed to stand out from all his other opponents. And it seems that Mayweather is going to go toe-to-toe against this fighter once again.
Earlier this year, Mayweather went toe-to-toe against John Gotti III in an exhibition bout. Initially, the fight went as expected and Mayweather dominated John Gotti III. He even started playing around mocking his opponent. Moreover, Gotti seemed reluctant to throw punches at the former champion. He only started to do so in the later rounds. However, as the referee stopped the fight after not being able to separate the two, all hell broke loose.

Notably, Gotti III and Mayweather both stopped paying heed to what the referee was saying towards the end of the fight. They even started trash-talking amid the bout. Furthermore, Gotti being frustrated because of the fight getting stopped, attacked Mayweather. This caused a brawl to break out all over the arena as both teams filled the ring. It seems that Mayweather wants to finish things off properly this time as he recently announced the rematch on his social media.

He shared the poster for his next fight on Instagram. Moreover, in the caption, he wrote, “Kicking Off Super Bowl Weekend – Unfinished Business. See You Guys In Las Vegas. More Details Coming Soon!! @mayweatherpromotions”. Though the exact details about the venue and date are unknown. It will be interesting to see how the two go at one another after entering the fight with such bad blood.

Manny Pacquiao’s hopes for a rematch dashed?

This announcement from Mayweather is certainly surprising considering Manny Pacquiao was pushing for a rematch bout against him. The Filipino legend was present during the highly anticipated Tyson Fury vs Francis Ngannou bout. After the controversial bout, he hinted at the possibility of a rematch between the two legendary rivals. He had shared that the two may end up locking horns next month.

Even though both fighters are now much older and retired, if the fight could be made then it would have undoubtedly attracted the attention of boxing fans all over the world. He stated, “I’m still active, I’m an active guy, I’m actively training. I have an exhibition match this coming December in Japan. We’re working on it, the opponent. We’re working with Mayweather. Yes [a Mayweather fight].”

During the Francis Ngannou vs. Tyson Fury bout in Riyadh, McGregor had made some interesting remarks about boxer, Manny Pacquiao. The two men were apparently involved in talks surrounding a crossover bout but the negotiations weren’t enough to reach a deal. This led to a lawsuit being served between the two camps. Although it seemed like the two men were engaged in a war of words, Pacquiao recently shared a post on Instagram that indicates things between the pair have now settled down!

In an interview with BT Sport ahead of the Ngannou vs Fury bout, McGregor revealed the backstory behind him and Pacquiao attempting to set up a crossover superfight. McGregor revealed that there were serious talks about him and Manny Pacquiao engaging in a boxing match in Saudi Arabia around two or three years ago.

But the fight fell through and McGregor’s management team successfully sued Pacquiao for not following through on the proposed two-fight deal. This led to McGregor taking shots at Pacquiao on social media, where he stated, “Where’s my $8 million from that court case, Manny Pacquiao? You owe me $8 million, Manny.” The voice note by McGregor on Twitter/X has since been deleted.

However, the two men have now seemingly buried the hatchet. A recent post by Pacquiao on Instagram shows him with McGregor, Roberto Duran, and Mike Tyson, all smiles. Pacquiao captioned the post, “Tag team in a street fight anyone? I got my team 😂”

The Instagram post featuring both fighters, along with Roberto Duran and Mike Tyson, suggests a reconciliation, with Pacquiao playfully proposing a tag team in a street fight. This turn of events hints at a resolution between the two camps, leaving fans intrigued about what the future holds for these iconic figures in the world of combat sports.

But McGregor’s return to the UFC Octagon has been the cause of much speculation amongst MMA fans. And latest reports indicate that the ‘Notorious’ will be making his comeback in 2024!

McGregor and his coach share different timelines for his return

Conor McGregor has claimed that he is ready to fight at the historic UFC 300 card. Despite his coach John Kavanagh recently stating that there is a possibility of McGregor fighting again in July 2024. McGregor has now come out and made an interesting statement regarding his availability for UFC 300 which is scheduled for April 2024.

McGregor’s comments came in response to a fan on Twitter/X inquiring about him taking part in UFC 300. McGregor responded by stating, “In!” to confirm his interest in the PPV event.

Crawford asserted that he no longer desires a showdown with ‘Mell’ Charlo. “Ok, y’all. I’m over @TwinCharlo. He’s no longer on my hit list,” wrote ‘Bud.’ What’s more, Crawford wasn’t done – he went on to insult Charlo’s subpar performance. “He went out there and laid down and let Canelo spank him like he was his daddy with no type of resistance.”

Is it the fear of a loss or the lack of resources to back such massive cards? The answers oscillate between the two. The Fury-Usyk clash has been prolonged for almost a year now. Insiders strongly attribute the delay to Fury’s disapproval of the purse splits. On the other hand, Anthony Joshua and Deontay Wilder have been chasing their showdown for about seven years now. Yet, a date for the fight has not emerged. In such stagnant waters, a bygone voice has emerged in strong criticism.

In a conversation with Daily Star, former super middleweight champion, Joe Calzaghe chimed into the ongoing discourse about the heavyweight class. One of the most revered English fighters of his time, Calzaghe was a driving force in traditional boxing in the realm. Today, years after he has hung his gloves, he still holds the normative ecosystem of boxing valid. He disapproves of YouTubers venturing into the sport. And to save boxing from their advent, he made his plea to the current boxing stars.

As he stood ringside in Saudi for the exhibition-esque clash between Fury and novice boxer Francis Ngannou, the future of the boxing realm flashed in front of him. It was at this point that it dawned on him that it was notable fighters like Fury, Usyk, AJ, and Wilder that could keep the sport at the helm of glory. He mentions the changing landscape of the sport. “You have young fans who are not boxing fans, they are Jake Paul fans,” remarked Calzaghe. He might hold some conservative views about who boxing should open up to, but he is not completely wrong about YouTubers today, standing poised to get better recognition than pro-fighters.

He understands that he is a 51-year-old retired boxer, whose era is a story of bygones. But he still came from a time when unbeaten champs got the acknowledgment their prowess deserved. He lamented, “On the one hand, we have unbeaten world champions who are not getting the recognition, and maybe the rewards, they deserve. On the other hand, we have YouTubers who are getting millions of pounds for fighting, who don’t know much about boxing.”

Boxing is after all a sport that has historically been the bastion of the legends. When looked closer, it is the heavyweight class that hosted names like Muhammad Ali and Mike Tyson that pushed the sport to where it is today. Calzaghe says, “In the heavyweight division, we have Wilder, AJ, Fury and Usyk. Those four are all big stars. But why aren’t they fighting each other? I would love to see that happen. So would every proper boxing fan out there. But instead, we have Fury fighting a guy who’s never boxed in Saudi Arabia.” 

Fury fought Ngannou on the 28th of October. The WBC champion has been the scourge of criticism ever since the inception of the Ngannou fight. Critics have pointed out that Fury undertook a fight purely for the sake of money and gave up on the bigger, more vital picture: his unification of titles clash against Usyk. But in response, there is a common understanding that fighters today resonate with. If boxers like Fury got the compensation that their experience and record demanded, the Ngannou fight would have never happened.

Similarly, the AJ and Wilder clash has taken forever to be realized. The latest developments have emerged regarding their plans in the ring. AJ and Wilder may finally fight on the same Saudi card on the 23rd of December. However, the two will still not fight each other despite being at the same venue on the same day. Organizers have hinted that they are saving the fight for a bigger clash next year. Meanwhile, Fury’s promoter Frank Warren has also clarified that his fighter needs some time to recuperate after the Ngannou bout. Fury will mostly face off against Usyk in February or March 2024.

It’s worth noting that Shakur ‘Sugar’ Stevenson is about to face Edwin Le Dos Santos for the vacant WBC Lightweight title. Previously, ‘Sugar’ was supposed to face Devin ‘The Dream’ Haney for the same title, but things took a sour turn when Haney offered an unfair purse split to Shakur. Meanwhile, the Newark native has shown optimism about the fight with Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis some time in the future. So, until these pugilists eventually meet in the ring, Bomac, Terence Crawford’s trainer, picks his favorite among them.
While talking to Fight Hype, Bomac claimed Shakur would best De Los Santos in their upcoming fight. “[Shakur] he is just gonna be too sharp for [De Los Santos] him,” said Bomac. When probed about a fight between Shakur and Haney, Bomac confidently revealed that it would be a close fight, but Shakur would win. “I think Shakur will edge it out,” said the trainer.

Later in the interview, the reporter questioned Bomac about Shakur’s fate against ‘Tank’ Davis. Crawford’s trainer responded by claiming it would be a bit challenging for Shakur. But Bomac thinks Shakur thrives in challenging situations, so he would do what is needed to win. “That’s going to be a little trouble for him…Shakur is one of those fighters that love challenges…he will do everything he needs…to get that,” said Bomac.

Former professional boxer Antonio Tarver is one of the biggest fans of ‘Sugar’ Stevenson and ‘Tank’ Davis. According to an interview with Betway, Traver would love to see a fight between them, suggesting the winner would be an instant legend. It’s worth mentioning that ‘Sugar’ has shown interest in the fight, but no such comments have come from Davis.

Tarver thinks Shakur and Davis would remain after everyone is defeated. He went on to suggest that it would be too soon for the duo to face each other now, but when they do fight, it will be legendary. Tarver also added, “The winner will become an instant legend and the GOAT.”

Terence Crawford never saw this coming. Following his triumph over Errol Spence Jr. in the International Boxing Federation (IBF) match, a twist unfolded as Spence exercised a rematch clause in August, as reported by ESPN on Friday. This clause mandated Crawford’s next bout to be against Spence to retain the coveted Welterweight title. However, the IBF threw a curveball by directing Crawford to defend his title against the interim champion, Jaron “Boots” Ennis.

Informed of this in September, Crawford’s title now rests in Ennis’ hands as the interim titleholder. With this turn of events, his coach, Brian Bomac McIntyre has called out the bias as other boxers continue to hold their titles

Bomac, the coach and trainer of Crawford has since long been with the pugilist. He finds this decision gravely unfair and biased. In an interview with FightHype.com, he expressed his frustration over the situation. “It’s kind of biased how they treat Terrence, kind of fu*ked up but you know, we accomplish what we need to accomplish. We got that undisputed title, 47. They can’t take that away from him. They take everything else, but they can’t take that. That’s his history being made.”

At 36, with an unblemished record of 40-0 and 31 KOs, Crawford sees his undisputed status relinquished but retains the WBO, WBA, and WBC belts. According to Bomac, even though ‘Bud’ does not hold the official title, he has proved himself by achieving undisputed status. As he proceeds further, the career he builds will make a mark in history. However, other fighters have held on to their belts without much of a consequence of being stripped off of them.

Jermell Charlo, hailing from Lafayette, Louisiana, stands as the undisputed champion in the junior middleweight division, a title he has held since 2016, barring a brief setback with a decision loss to Tony Harrison in 2018—a defeat he avenged in a rematch in 2019. In a contrasting scenario, the 168 lbs. division sees Canelo Alvarez reigning as the undisputed champion since 2021 post a TKO victory against Caleb Plant.

Moreover, a shadow looms over the sport’s integrity as the WBC permits Jermell’s twin, Jermall, to retain his middleweight title without a defence for 2 1/2 years, a decision that raises eyebrows and draws attention to the complexities within the world of boxing.

While these fighters continue to hold their belts without any questioning or repercussions, it is natural that Crawford and Bomac are calling foul.

Sometimes, bouts outside the ring become the main draw. How implausible! However, if the Gervonta Davis and Devin Haney feud undergoes scrutiny, even skeptics might find themselves leaning towards the thought. An old conversation about Haney stopping Davis seems to have found a new lease on life. But like last time, a quick reply from the latter came, questioning the logic behind such a claim.

@HowBoxingWorks had tweeted, “Stop making excuses; you look goofy. I don’t care what his excuse is; he got stopped regardless. Devin Haney indeed stopped Tank; get off his n*ts and look at the facts of the situation.” Just like the last time, Davis didn’t waste any time responding. He said, “M*****f***er can’t even stop someone with 8 Oz on you think think he stop someone  w 14 or 16 yo boy.” Later, the Baltimorean southpaw added that the only reason they are picking on him is because he is a good publicity stunt for their match.
The Boxing Voice shared the tweets through an Instagram post early today. As could be expected, a slew of comments flew in. Both boxers enjoy the support of a die-hard group of fans. Many voices believed that both boxers should enter the ring and settle the argument for good.
The following expressed his frustration at the confusion. First, it was Gervonta Davis who came close to preventing Haney from continuing. Now it appears that it was the latter who turned the tables on the former. The best solution would be to make a fight between the two happen. Whatever the outcome, that alone would be considered: “At first, it was Tank who almost stopped Haney. Now it’s Haney who almost stopped Tank. Just make the fight happen, and that outcome will be the only one that matters. In the ring. Like the professionals they claim to be.”

According to this fan, Davis has a strong chin. On the other hand, Haney is not particularly known as a powerful puncher. Hence, expressing their disbelief, the fan in fact considers the claim total garbage: “Yeah, I’m calling bull**it. Tanks got a surprisingly good chin, and Devin ain’t exactly Mr. power-puncher.” For the following fan, the narrative sounds unbelievable despite being a Devin Haney fan. However, they pointed out that ‘The Dream’ deserves credit for challenging the best. Hence, it’s high time ‘Tank’ starts facing legitimate challenges: “Even as a Haney fan, I don’t believe that story. But respect to Haney for taking on the best. Tank needs to start taking on real challenges.”

Approaching the issue a bit more directly, this fan stated that Davis would knock down Haney. Moreover, the Baltimorean isn’t lying when he says that the unified champion hasn’t knocked out any of his recent opponents: “Devin going to sleep, and Tank ain’t lying because we have yet to see him stop anyone recently.” Echoing almost similar thoughts, this user also pointed out that Devin Haney hasn’t knocked out any fighters in the last few years. Hence, they proposed to wait and watch if knocks out any future opponent like Gervonta Davis does: “He ain’t knocked out in real fights in years; see if he gonna knock somebody out like Tank in the springs.”

Clearly, given his immense popularity, most fans are finding it hard to believe in someone halting Gervonta Davis.

Adrien Broner, who seems to have some knowledge on the matter, spoke about it on the podcast ‘Million Dollaz Worth of Game.’ As most know, ‘AB’ is close to both Davis and Floyd Mayweather Jr. He said, “He sparred Devin. It’s packed, it’s hot. They get in there. Tank hit that n****. He hit him, boom! Then he hit him again, and he like went out… Tank got a little bit more fatigue….and once they kept going, Devin got, you know, Devin got the best of them, okay, but in a real fight time with eight-ounce gloves on bye.”

As far as the actuals are concerned, Davis, after the Ryan Garcia fight, has yet to return to the ring. Incidentally, he even had to spend 44 days in prison for a 2020 case. Various rumor mills speculate that he might make a return by the first quarter of 2024. Devin Haney, on the other hand, after a successful title defense against Vasyl Lomachenko, moved to 140 to challenge Regis Prograis. The duo will meet on December 9 at the Chase Center in San Francisco. Time alone will tell whether he will stay back and fight other champions in the light welterweight division or return to the lightweight division. If he comes back, then a fight with ‘Tank’ might be in the offing.

Why would one make a former world champion like Mike Tyson wait? But if you were to do so, be assured that you will witness his wrath, even if it’s shrouded in humor. A video has been making the rounds on the internet that shows Tyson all fumed up after he was forced to exercise some patience.

The incident dates back to weeks ago when the boxing realm descended to Saudi Arabia to witness the high-profile exhibition-esque clash between WBC heavyweight champ, Tyson Fury and debutante boxer, Francis Ngannou. Mike Tyson’s presence at the event was justified more than ever as he stood by the ring to support Ngannou, whom he took under his wing before the October 28th clash. While things did go in favor of the Tyson-Ngannou duo that night, something else irked the legend.

A video shared by former pro-boxer Tony Jeffries shows ‘Iron Mike’  all suited in a stiff tuxedo yelling, “Hey listen, right? I’mma get the f*ck outta here. Let’s get this shit started, alright?” What happened that got the legend so fumed up you ask?

Well, Jeffries explained that at the gala dinner before the Fury-Ngannou fight, all boxers present at the venue were called for a picture in the adjacent room. The first person to reach the photo session was Iron Mike. However, after having to wait for other boxers, Tyson lost his calm. The video has prompted fans to discuss the reasons behind the former boxer’s reaction.

One fan suggested that Tyson used boxing as a means to vent his anger and frustration. However, after he hung his gloves, he could not find alternatives to boxing.

Mike Tyson might have faced skepticism when joining Francis Ngannou’s camp for his showdown with Tyson Fury. Ngannou’s open workout with Tyson drew mockery, and the exclusion of renowned coach Teddy Atlas fueled controversy. It further prompted speculation about Saudi money’s role in Tyson’s involvement, alleging it was part of the Kingdom’s “sports washing” strategy.

However, Ngannou silenced critics with a stunning performance. He knocked down Tyson Fury in the third round and narrowly lost by split decision. Tyson, on his ‘Hotboxin’ with Mike Tyson’ podcast, praised Ngannou’s coachability. He emphasized the effectiveness of his advice and predicted the devastating left hook that played a crucial role in the fight.
