Terence Crawford Being Stripped of the IBF Title Should Not Be a Major Hiccup for the Two-Time Welterweight Undisputed Champion

The undisputed reign of Terence Crawford has ended dramatically. You would imagine him to have a splendid run at the top, dismantling both legends and hot prospects. But it didn’t happen. He has lost his IBF title in a fashion that has left the fans in disgust. The American champion was stripped of his belt, only leaving the WBC, WBO, and WBA Welterweight straps in his possession.

‘Bud’ knocked out Errol Spence Jr. in July to clinch the undisputed Welterweight title. His beatdown of Spence Jr. was complete and dominant as he snatched his IBF, WBA, and WBC belts. However, soon, the IBF mandated him to fight Jaron Ennis. Ennis, the IBF’s mandatory candidate since January 2022, even defended his interim title against Roiman Villa in July. Therefore, when Terence Crawford’s camp failed to negotiate a fight with Ennis, the IBF promptly elevated Ennis as the champion.

It all started with Errol Spence Jr. triggering the rematch clause. Crawford and Spence Jr. will run it back one more time, probably in February next year. Despite his being stripped of the IBF title, it won’t alter the contract terms. Neither will affect his negotiating power.

In addition, the 36-year-old didn’t lose the title in the ring. His boxing prowess is not questioned, and the fans can’t point fingers at him. Notably, Jermell Charlo became the IBF super Welterweight champion in 2020 and, since defending it against Brian Castaño in May 2022, went through surgery. Most recently, he endeavored to fight Canelo Alvarez at 168 lbs. And his IBF title has no scratch and is lying with him. Irony? Maybe.

Meanwhile, on multiple occasions, Crawford has questioned Ennis’ credentials and expressed his intent to look past him. “That (fight with Ennis) can happen. ‘Cause we at the same weight class. But you know, at this point in time, I’m looking for bigger and better opportunities,” the American boxer told Hot 97.

Crawford is chasing more prominent and better fighters to set his legacy in stone, and Ennis didn’t fit the bill. Hence, the writing was on the wall for quite some time, and IBF only did the inevitable. As far as Crawford is concerned, his eyes are locked on a rematch with ‘The Truth’.

Is a rematch with Errol Spence Jr. an exciting or bad idea for both?

What the fans saw when Crawford and Spence Jr. collided doesn’t necessitate a rematch. The victory was comprehensive. The fans saw Crawford piercing through the defense of undefeated Spence Jr. Crawford and knocking him down three times before finishing the job.

The rematch could be a bit more competitive. But the vast mismatch of skills and dominance can’t be bridged. Crawford had been calling out big names for a while, and handing a defeat to Errol Spence Jr. has only fueled that fire. With or without the IBF title, the Omaha native would have marched ahead in the search for bigger names.

At Welterweight, Crawford reigns supreme, and after slaying Spence Jr., the landscape is not exciting anymore. There are rumors of him moving up to 154, where the Spence Jr. match could also occur. After settling Spence Jr.’s saga behind him, he can finally move ahead and try to seize Jermell Charlo’s light middleweight crown.

Alternatively, the 40-0 record holder can have a go at Canelo Alvarez at 168 lbs. The super fight can rack up millions, meet his precondition of legacy hunting, and bestow upon him the credit he deeply desires. At 36, Crawford is not getting younger. He has nothing left to prove, and if he endeavors to move up in the conquest of bigger names, tossing aside the IBF title is no big deal.

Recently, Shakur Stevenson shared his interest in a potential fight against Davis. Interestingly, it seems that during his time off the ring, Davis is not slacking off in his training. Recently, a video of him training along with his trainer Calvin Ford surfaced on Social Media. The caption of the post read, “Gervonta Davis training with his coach, Calvin Ford.” Notably, the two appeared to be working on Davis’ technique in the video.

As the videos of the boxing sensation training along with his trainer surfaced, fans quickly shared their love for their favorite boxer. As for the video, fans had rather diverse reactions to share. One fan shared his deep love and respect for the Baltimore native, hailing him as unbeatable. The fan declared, “Tank beats everybody.”

In an interview with iFL TV, Hearn gave an insight into the future fights. Mentioning Fury, he said the ‘Gypsy King’ will fight Oleksandr Usyk since there is a humongous amount of money involved. However, he might retire after the bout. But if both Fury and Joshua both beat their opponents in their respective upcoming fights and then decide to battle each other, it would cause a storm. However, the ball, as Hearn contended, is in Fury’s court at the moment.

Hearn is still hopeful about the fight. As he said, “I think if you said to AJ, bear in your mind how important it is to fight for the world heavyweight championship; I think if you said to AJ- what would you prefer? To win the world heavyweight championship again or to fight Tyson Fury, I think he might say the world heavyweight championship, but deep down if he doesn’t fight Fury in his career, he’d be gutted.”

Though a match with Fury might not be on Joshua’s priority list, Hearn thinks his career will be incomplete without locking horns with his long-time rival.

Deontay Wilder’s trainer and former heavyweight contender, Malik Scott, is confident he knows what would happen should Tyson Fury ever fight Anthony Joshua following his lacklustre showing against Francis Ngannou.

Speaking to ESNews, Scott was asked how British rival Joshua would get on against Fury after that showing.

“Anthony Joshua against Fury? That Fury, he’ll beat. And I believe [Joshua will] beat Ngannou. There is only one man who knocks him out cold, and I think we know who that is, Deontay Wilder.”

Scott was then asked how Oleksandr Usyk will fare against Fury when the pair meet, though one former champion has advised the Brit against that fight.

“He’ll beat this Fury. His feet will be too much for Fury.”

Scott highlighted the punishment Fury has taken across his career and the effect that is now starting to have.

“Even though Fury won this fight [with Ngannou] I don’t know, father time, he’s an older 35. He’s been in three fights with Wilder. That was Fury’s eighth time getting knocked down.”

Whether Fury is in decline or it was just an off night, fans will find out when he steps into the ring with Usyk

“I think Tank is a competitor. I know deep down inside he want to prove to the world that he’ll beat me. As well as I want to prove to the world that I’ll beat him,” said Stevenson. Citing that as the reason, Stevenson asserted Davis would definitely fight him. Moreover, when it came to Haney, Shakur asserted that Haney would stay in the 140 division for a long time. “I think he’s going to be at 140 for a long time,” said Shakur.
