Anthony Joshua displays more erratic behavior after huge knockout

Anthony Joshua caused unease after his fight with Robert Helenius at the O2 Arena, not for the first time in his career.

After drafting in a late replacement, he looked unconvincing in taking seven rounds to dispatch an opponent Deontay Wilder smashed in 177 seconds.

Joshua felt out Helenius, who Wilder completely obliterated, and sometimes seemed gun-shy. The pair had landed 51 and 34 jabs through six rounds, respectively.

That’s compared to 15 and 11 power punches. The contest of jabs ended abruptly in the seventh round. The end came courtesy of an overhand right thrown by Joshua that put Helenius down and out.

After getting the job done, Joshua showed behavior similar to that at the Oleksandr Usyk rematch.

Taking out Helenius in the seventh after the Finn came in at five days’ notice, Joshua sprinted out of the ring and did a lap of honor.

At that time, nobody knew if Helenius was okay as he landed prone on the floor and wasn’t moving.

Anthony Joshua’s erratic behavior

Eventually, Joshua returned to the ring and began supping Conor McGregor’s alcohol. Shortly after, it was time for his post-fight interview.

Firstly, he weirdly stated he wanted to fight twice more this year. That’s despite having a twelve-week camp for this event.

Considering there are only twenty weeks left in 2023, it was a strange statement to make. The interviewer then attempted to speak to Joshua, who would only allow him three questions.

When asked about Deontay Wilder, Joshua unfathomably stated that he’s been ‘carrying the division on his back.’ That’s despite not being involved in the title picture. He also has lost three of his last seven bouts.

The Londoner then ran out of the ring again. He didn’t act like the professional of old.

It’s more erraticness from AJ that seems to have sprung from his mentality since losing to Andy Ruiz Jr. and then Usyk twice.

The fact of the matter is that Joshua got bloodied by Helenius and wasn’t convincing at all until finding the equalizer.

Wilder

Most heavyweights would consider it a decent win against an also-ran contender. They wouldn’t run around the arena celebrating as if they’d reclaimed the world title.

On this evidence, if Deontay Wilder is next – as World Boxing News reported on Saturday – Joshua won’t be favored to win. He’ll be up against it.

Shelly Finkel, Wilder’s co-manager, told World Boxing News exclusively: “I can confirm that Deontay Wilder vs Andy Ruiz Jr. is off, for now. All I can say is that I hope Anthony Joshua wins the fight.”

After Joshua did his part, Eddie Hearn confirmed that Finkel had texted him about making the clash for January.

Joshua will need some vast improvements if he’s going to be able to live with the American on this form, though.

His behavior also leaves a lot to be desired. Roll on Wilder vs Joshua.

Gervonta Davis Trainer Rules Out Crawford Fight And Reveals Likely Next Opponent

Despite the gulf in weight classes between the pair, there has been talk of an all-American mega fight between Terence Crawford and Gervonta Davis.

However, Davis’ trainer has poured cold water on that speculation – as well revealed who he believes his charge will take on next.

In a recent interview with FightHype, Calvin Ford claimed ‘Tank’ was just “playing around” when he stated he would stop Crawford.

Crawford – who recently became undisputed champion in the welterweight ranks – said recently he would stick around in that division if ‘Tank’ wanted to jump up from lightweight for a challenge.

He also added that a rematch with Isaac Cruz was also the frontrunner for the Baltimore puncher’s next fight.

“He was just playing around, end of story. ‘Tank’ does that to get an eyebrow raise out of people.”

“It’s like when they talk about Inoue. He’s weight classes below, but everyone still says something about that fight.”

“Right now, we’re just waiting on that contract to come across our desk for who we’re fighting next and who we’re getting ready for. My thinking is that it’ll be ‘Pitbull.’

Davis has not boxed since his stunning stoppage victory over Ryan Garcia in April, and was only last month released from a brief jail sentence.

Isaac ‘Pitbull’ Cruz is one of only two men to have taken Davis to the final bell, having lost a competitive decision back in 2021 in what many believe was ‘Tank’s toughest fight as a professional.

Davis was a clear winner on the night even despite a hand injury and ‘Pitbull’ failed to impress in his most recent outing, but a rematch may make sense to get the former back into the swing of things.

Floyd Mayweather Calls For Gervonta Davis To Face Superstar In Catchweight Fight

Floyd Mayweather has had his say on who tops the pound-for-pound rankings in the wake of some high-level match-ups featuring the best in the business – but he thinks one fight still needs to happen before the current debate can be settled.

First up, Japanese knockout artist Naoya Inoue blew away Stephen Fulton to become unified super-bantamweight king having already established himself as the undisputed champion in the division below.

The ease with which he saw off Fulton’s challenge, and then the knockout blow he delivered in the 8th round, took him to the top of the P4P rankings for many.

However, just days later, Terence Crawford put in a similarly superb showing against Errol Spence Jr. He dominated just about from the off and eventually stopped Spence in the 9th round to take all four world titles in the welterweight division.The consensus was that the win immediately elevated him above Inoue in the P4P, but not everyone agrees.

Speaking to FightHype, former multi-division world champion Mayweather has plenty of praise for Inoue.

“I think he’s a helluva fighter, I take nothing away from him, helluva fighter. And I like him. He takes a lot of stuff from my playbook, but that’s OK, in boxing, you’re supposed to take something from the gears.”

He then proposed what would be a superb fight with one of his charges, a multi-weight world champion, fearsome puncher and one of the best active lightweights in the world who most recently knocked out Ryan Garcia.“What I would like to see is if [Inoue] would fight Gervonta [Davis] at a catchweight.”

Mayweather believes that Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis is unfairly left out of the conversation of the best in the world by too many.

One way to cement his place would be the Inoue bout, although just how far the Japanese champion will move up in weight remains to be seen.

Anthony Joshua fights Robert Helenius at the O2 Arena tonight, as the Finn steps in for Dillian Whyte on seven days’ notice.

Joshua was set for his third clash with Whyte here, having lost to his fellow Briton as an amateur before knocking him out in 2015. However, Whyte returned an adverse finding in a drug test last week, leading him to be pulled from tonight’s main event. Helenius, a former sparring partner of “AJ”, steps in, just seven days after having fought and won in Finland.

With that early stoppage of Mika Mielonen, Helenius bounced back from a first-round loss to Deontay Wilder, who was left in tears after stopping the 39-year-old in the first round in October. Meanwhile, Joshua, 33, last fought in April, beating Jermaine Franklin on points to respond positively to two straight losses to Oleksandr Usyk.

Adesanya is already heavily favored to defend his title when he meets Strickland next month.

Regardless of the odds or fan perception around the matchup, Israel Adesanya’s head coach Eugene Bareman says that they’re looking at Sean Strickland as a serious threat heading into UFC 293.

“The Last Stylebender” was expected to defend his middleweight title against Dricus Du Plessis at UFC 293 in Australia, but after “Stillknocks” said he wouldn’t be ready in time for that event the UFC called on #5-ranked Strickland to step in and challenge the champion.

The general consensus around the combat sports community seems to be that Strickland doesn’t pose a major threat to Adesanya, but Bareman recently told Submission Radio that it’s dangerous to fall into that line of thinking.

“History proves if you start to take that attitude these are the fights that come up and bite you in the a**,” Bareman said. “And real champions, real people who are the best in the world, they’re the best in the world because every time they step up to the plate and fight for that championship belt they prepare themselves accordingly, no matter who the opponent is. And that’s what we do.”

Eugene Bareman Cites Floyd Mayweather As Inspiration For Israel Adesanya

Adesanya has already defended the middleweight belt against the majority of the division’s top challengers, and Bareman says that they’re looking at the example set by dominant champions like Floyd Mayweather during the lead up to UFC 293.

“We get a lot of inspiration from Floyd Mayweather, and the way that he lived his life and his lifestyle and the way that he approached each and every single fight. You’re talking about a guy that was levels and levels above some of his competition, but mentally he never treated any of the opponents like he was much more gifted than they were. He treated them like they were his equal and that they had a chance to beat him, and he prepared each and every time accordingly. And that’s what we do as well, we take that same philosophy that he had and now we apply it to every single fight.”

There was a sense around the sport that Adesanya had largely cleared out the division after defeating Jared Cannonier at UFC 276, but in his next fight the 34-year-old’s former kickboxing rival Alex Pereira scored a dramatic fifth-round knockout to claim the middleweight title.

“The Last Stylebender” got revenge at UFC 287 when he finished Pereira and reclaimed his belt, and now if he intends to settle the animosity between himself and Du Plessis he’ll first need to best Strickland when the pair headline UFC 293.

Anthony Joshua showed what he can do when he lets his hands go against Kubrat Pulev, as he KO’d him in spectacular fashion.

The pair clashed in 2020, with Joshua coming off the back of a win in his rematch against Andy Ruiz Jr, having previously lost his titles at the hands of the Mexican in one of the great upsets in heavyweight boxing history.

But, against Pulev, Joshua briefly got his career back on track, as he demonstrated the power punching that made him so feared as a young fighter.

In the first round of their fight, both men began tentatively, but it did not take long for Joshua to start unleashing his devastating combinations.

In round three, Joshua landed an excellent counter right hand that wobbled Pulev and later in the round an uppercut toppled the Bulgarian.

Somehow, Pulev returned to his feet and survived all the way until round nine.

But, at this point, Joshua seemed to get a second wind, as he put relentless pressure on his opponent and as the round wore on, he caught Pulev with four brutal uppercuts in a row.

This was not the end, however, as the brave Bulgarian remained resolute, until he was hit with yet another uppercut that dropped him.

And after rising once more, Joshua broke through with a thunderous right hand that saw Pulev collapse to the canvas, lying there flat on his back, as the referee waved off the contest.

This marked the most recent KO of Joshua’s career, as he has gone on to lose twice against Oleksandr Usyk and then return with a unanimous decision victory over Jermaine Franklin last time out.

But, on Saturday night, Joshua will undoubtedly be hoping to add another knockout to his record when he comes up against Robert Helenius at the O2 Arena in London.

Fedor Emelianenko’s legendary MMA career may be over, but he’s not ready to give up combat sports just yet. And he has a big name in mind for his next fight.

Emelianenko called out Mike Tyson for a potential boxing match during an interview on the MMA Hour.

“We watched the fight on TV of Roy Jones Jr. vs. Mike Tyson. Mike Tyson would be an interesting fight,” Emelianenko said. “He has a big name, he’s a legend. … It would be interesting because you can see a lot of his videos on YouTube and all over the place, he’s still in good shape. He still works pads, he still has that same power.”

Tyson returned to the ring in November 2020 for an exhibition against Jones Jr., drawing a jaw-dropping 1.6 million pay-per-view buys. Interest in the fight sparked rumors Tyson could head back into the ring for future exhibitions—most notably against Evander Holyfield—but nothing has come to fruition.

The bout marked the first time in 15 years Tyson entered a boxing ring.

Emelianenko retired from MMA in February after a first-round TKO loss to Ryan Bader at Bellator 290. He does not have any professional boxing experience, but the 46-year-old is 11 years Tyson’s junior and has been an active fighter far more recently.

It’s unclear if Tyson has any interest in getting back into the ring after landing a strong pay day for his Jones fight, but a cross-sport bout between the two legends would undoubtedly draw significant attention.
