Anthony Joshua have inspired British heavyweight to become world champion

Tyson Fury believes both he and British rival Anthony Joshua have changed the heavyweight landscape for Britain’s rising prospects; Fury stills eyes a future stadium fight at Old Trafford: “Never say never”; plus Scott Welch considers the pros and cons of Fury vs Ngannou

Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua agree on little.

They certainly don’t seem to be about to reach an agreement on fighting each other any time soon. But Fury believes they have both forged a path that other British heavyweights can follow.

“I think we’ve given them a lot to aim for, with me and AJ,” Fury told Sportnow

“We’ve given them a lot of hope that it can be done. Because before I became world champion, Britain had only had maybe six or five world [heavyweight] champions throughout the history of boxing.

“All of a sudden we had a few more of late,” he continued. “A lot of highly ranked world heavyweights. I think we’ve inspired a lot of people and hopefully they can go on and continue to do well in the division.”

But while he acknowledges how capable some of the UK’s rising heavyweights are, he doesn’t see any of them rivalling him or Joshua just yet.

“I think we’ve got a lot of talent. Young David Adeleye, Solomon Dacres, Johnny Fisher, Frazer Clarke, Nathan Gorman, Daniel Dubois,” Fury said. “There’s a lot of red hot talent coming through in this country especially.

“I think there’s a lot of good fights at British level at the moment,” he continued.

“I don’t think they’re anywhere near world level at the moment. They’re only young people so they should be contesting for English titles, maybe the British title. So I’m not sure how far they can go, but they definitely look like good prospects.”

While he is not optimistic that an all-British heavyweight clash with Anthony Joshua can be made, Fury still expects to have major contests in the UK, eyeing Old Trafford as a potential venue for a stadium fight.

“I was supposed to fight at Old Trafford last year,” he noted.

“Never say never.”

Fury vs Ngannou: Good for the game?

Tyson Fury will meet former UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou next in a boxing contest in October.

The decision to pit the current WBC titlist against a debutant in the ring has raised eyebrows and ignited debates within the boxing community.

Speaking on the Toe2Toe podcast former British heavyweight champion Scott Welch took a balanced view. He highlighted Fury’s achievements.

“He went over to America [to box Deontay Wilder] not once, but three times. He went over to Germany [to beat Wladimir Klitschko and become a unified world champion]. He’s done more than any other one even would have dared to. He’s a super champ in my eyes,” Welch stated.

Fury’s international engagements and his remarkable battles with Wilder and Klitschko have undeniably earned him a high standing within the sport.

Welch delved into the concerns over the choice of opponent, although he underscored the rationale behind Fury’s decision.

“[The Derek] Chisora fight, that was his one that he deserved after the big fight, the [Dillian] Whyte fight. After that, he deserved an easy fight,” Welch said.

“Maybe he should have announced that he’s going to do a tour and go around and fight a few people and he’s going to come back when he’s ready. Because I think mentally, he needs a break as well.”

He also noted the broader context of this fight, drawing parallels with other notable instances in the combat sports.

“[Muhammad] Ali did a similar thing [with Antonio Inoki]. There’s just too much talk. There’s been too much talk along the road and maybe it should have just been done a bit differently,” he said.

As for the impact on the boxing landscape, Welch was pragmatic. “Is it good for the game? Not really,” he said.

“As long as he comes back afterwards and quite quickly, then you’re great.”

Fury should return to the ring against more traditional opponents after this and demand to see him against unified WBA, WBO and IBF heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk remains.

“So, if we’re going to get this fight done, get it done, get it out of the way, we’re fine with it. We can handle it, take it, get the fight done, get back in the mix afterwards if you’re going to do that,” Welch stated

“Or say, I’m done.”

A controversial judge who oversaw a shocking scorecard involving Floyd Mayweather faced an explosive claim from a former Mike Tyson coach.

The scorer in question should be in jail for the verdict they handed in. That’s the view of Teddy Atlas.

The trainer and podcaster made the statement during a taping of his “The Fight with Teddy Atlas” series, which has proven successful.

Talking about Canelo in the aftermath of the Mexican superstar’s hard-fought victory over John Ryder, Atlas blasted the former pound-for-pound king.

But his comments against CJ Ross, who scored Mayweather vs Canelo a draw in 2013, caught the eye.

“Canelo has always been overrated,” pointed out Atlas in his unique outspoken manner. “That doesn’t mean he is not a real good fighter, but he is not the greatest Mexican fighter of all time.

“He is not the greatest Mexican fighter. He is overrated, and he probably lost to [Erislandy] Lara. But he also lost twice to GGG.

“I know it’s old news. It is old history. But he lost the first two [against Golovkin], especially the first one. He lost to Mayweather, every round, except for with that judge [CJ Ross] who should be in jail.”

World Boxing News spoke exclusively to Ross after she retired from the sport after two controversies. The first one was the Timothy Bradley vs Manny Pacquiao fiasco in 2012. She then followed it up with Mayweather vs Canelo months later.

Both scoring disasters were enough to put the final nails in her ringside boxing career.

Ross told Sportnow: “People don’t understand that all three judges could have ended any fight and, as a result, have the same score. Let’s say 116-112.

“But if you look at the commission’s score sheet, you would likely see they arrived at those scores by different rounds.

On the criticism she received, Ross added: “I have to consider the source. Because unless the critic was sitting in my seat viewing the fight from the angles I had and could feel or see the power and the flat and missed punches that are not seen by a camera, it’s not real criticism.

Addressing the Pacquiao score, the official stated: “In the Bradley v Pacquiao fight, I was in the majority of the three judges for twelve out of the twelve rounds.

“So I would say that has to be the standout fight for me. But they have all been memorable. I especially enjoyed the undercard fights. They are often more competitive and challenging to judge.”

Atlas may have been a bit strong in his wording. However, the consensus is Ross made the correct decision to walk away for good.

Getting called a “cherry picker” when he fought everyone with a name in his era, maybe apart from prime Manny Pacquiao, is wrong.

They did eventually fight, and Mayweather dominated. Many believe this may have been the outcome anyway, but we’ll never know.

Bear in mind that this is boxing we are talking about and it’s a high probability that Joshua could fight the 37th ranked guy (Canada’s Simon Kean in this case) instead of a really good fight that would blow your socks off.

Deontay Wilder: The One That Got Away

Full steam is ahead on a long rumored bout between Anthony Joshua and Deontay Wilder. The fight dates back to when the two held all of the heavyweight titles in their possession. Now the titles have all changed hands to Oleksandr Usyk and Tyson Fury and Wilder and Joshua are contenders in the division now.

The fight is rumored for January in Saudi Arabia and the Saudis are throwing money at them hand over fist. The estimated amount to be paid out is a staggering $110,000,000. The split for that fight is yet to be determined.

Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn says that this is the fight they are working towards now but Joshua says he wants to fight twice before the years out but that doesn’t seem to be the case if the Wilder fight is happening next and it’s in January. Of course there’s time for a tune up fight between now and then.

Don’t Count Out Anthony Joshua vs. Tyson Fury

This is an all-UK match and a fight for the only belt Anthony Joshua couldn’t hold, the WBC Heavyweight Title. That is, of course, held by Tyson Fury. Fury is booked former UFC champion Francis N’Gannou in October but that fight shouldn’t pose much of a threat to Fury. Joshua could easily be booked for a card after the N’Gannou fight but before the fight happens.

This one would do massive numbers and give Joshua a huge payday. But the risk factor, something that has a big part to do with boxers and who they fight next, is very high with Fury, as it is with Wilder. The pay check would have to be in the range of Saudi money like what’s being thrown at him with Wilder.

Of course, fighting this fight in the UK could make up for it. Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua would be a guaranteed sellout. Put it at Wembley, the biggest stadium in the UK. 90,000 fans would pack themselves in the stadium to see this fight.

Don’t count on this one. Fury is notoriously hard to deal with and Anthony Joshua may not want the risk.

The Most Likely Option: Zhilei Zhang-Joe Joyce Winner

This option is the most likely of the three because it requires the least work. Joe Joyce was upset by China’s Zhilei Zhang last April. Zhilei knocked out the undefeated Joyce in round six surprising the boxing community with the feat. Joyce had a rematch clause in the contract and has since activated it. The bout is set for September 23rd.

Simply put, the winner of that would be on the table for Joshua. He could have a huge UK homecoming, similar but not quite the magnitude as the Fury fight, should Joyce win. Joyce is also a massive hitter similar to Deontay Wilder. His record is 15-1 with 14 knockouts. This gives Joshua the best of both worlds. He gets to face a UK name in the UK and someone who hits hard.

Zhilei Zhang is the other side of the equation and shouldn’t be counted out. He beats Joyce and a date with Anthony Joshua could be in the cards. Joshua could expand his market to China if he wished but it would be more likely to have that fight in New York or the UK. Zhilei is an older fighter, 40 years of age, and has a 25-1-1 record with the WBO Interim World Heavyweight title.

The WBO title is held by Oleksandr Usyk and that could get in the way of a fight with Joshua and the Zhilei-Joyce winner. But a fight would bring numbers none the less.

Of course there are other options out there that could happen as well. Expect names like Andy Ruiz, Luis Ortiz, Filip Hrgovic, and Otto Wallin to all be thrown around. With how the politics and business of boxing have a grip, one of these names might come out of left field and surprise all of us.

Tank will turn 29 in November, and he still doesn’t have a career-defining win on his ten-year resume. It would be a good time for the Baltimore native to finally start fighting talented opposition to show that he’s for real and just someone looking to make easy money. Some boxing fans believe he’s just a fake manufactured fighter, fed weak opposition his entire career like Ryan Garcia to make him look better than he is, and steered away from quality opposition. Espinoza says whether Tank (29-0, 27 KOs) can fight later this year will depend on his physical condition. He’s been out of action since his fight against Ryan Garcia last April, and he recently did some jail time.

If Tank returns this year, Chris Colbert & Isaac ‘Pitbull’ Cruz are two of the names mentioned as possibilities for him to fight

The problem with Tank fighting either of those guys is they’ve looked poor recently, with Colbert (17-1, 6 KOs losing to Hector Garcia and winning a questionable ten round unanimous decision over Jose ‘Rayo’ Valenzuela last March. Some fans want to see Colbert run it back with Rayo to clear up his controversial decision or at least try to. “That’s something he definitely wants. I talked to [Gervonta’s trainer] Calvin [Ford]. He’s getting back into it,” said Showtime’s Stephen Espinoza to Hardcore Boxing News when asked if Gervonta Davis wants to fight again this year.

“It depends on where he’s at physically, being out of the gym for a couple of months. It does take some adjustments. He’s got to handle some business outside of the ring. “His goal is to get back as soon as he can,” Espinoza continued about Tank Davis. “If we can fit him in before the end of the year, we’ll do that. If not, it’ll be early next year.

‘Pitbull’ Cruz (25-2-1, 17 KOs), a fighter Tank Davis already beat in 2021, struggled last month to edge Giovanni Cabrera by a twelve round split decision on July 29th. After the fight, Pitbull complained about the scoring, but it was clear he’d gassed out in the second half of the fight and was used as a pinata by Cabrera.

Tank would look like he’s cherry-picking if he chose to fight Isaac Cruz after that performance, which you can argue, is precisely what the Mayweather-promoted Baltimore native has been most of his career apart from his fight with Jose Pedraza in 2017. Obviously, you can forget about Tank fighting any of the dangerous contenders from this list: – Shakur Stevenson – Frank Martin – Devin Haney – Vasily Lomachenko – Raymond Muratalla – William Zepeda – Keyshawn Davis – Edwin De Los Santos Even if Tank Davis had been staying busy in the gym all these months, it’s unrealistic that PBC would put him in against those fighters and risk getting him beaten or worn down for the punishment he would have to take to defeat them.

Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez will welcome Jermell Charlo to the super-middleweight ranks soon, giving the American a shot at his four world titles.

Floyd Mayweather – a boxing legend and one-time opponent of Canelo’s – believes there’s a chance the Mexican could ‘get old overnight.’

If miles on the clock is a disadvantage for the Mexican, he has plenty in his favour too. Charlo is currently undisputed at super-welterweight, meaning he’ll be jumping up two divisions for the challenge.

Although he’s a naturally big man, he’s not been in the ring with super-middle power in his pro career – of which Canelo has plenty.

Mayweather went on to address the point more generally, stating that there should be more checks and tests for fighters with long careers regardless of apparent signs of damage. “When I got fighters, we’ve got to be smart about this in the business.

You don’t ever want to say nothing to the athletic commission about certain fighters, their health, but their health is very important. So we have to start doing more research and more tests on these fighters if we genuinely care.”

Canelo – who isn’t as elite as he once was in the eyes of many fans – puts it all on the line again on September 30, with Charlo looking to shock the world.

Floyd Mayweather has never been a man short of confidence, a trait that has transitioned seamlessly from his fighting days to his role as a manager / promoter.

And ‘Money’ clearly believes in one of his young charges in particular, whom he says could win a world title in his next fight – which will be his professional debut.

Mayweather was speaking about teenage sensation Curmel Moton, who is considered one of America’s top amateurs and has been sparring the likes of Gervonta Davis since he was 16.

And in a recent interview with FightHype, Mayweather boldly claimed he would fancy Moton’s chances against WBA featherweight world champion Leigh Wood, even if it was his first ever professional fight.

“Who’s the champion at 126lbs, the British dude? Leigh Wood? I got a 126lber, Curmel Moton. That’d be a good match – now.

He’s turning pro. That’s a good match up right now. I don’t know who his promoter is. But I’m telling you that’s a good match up.

We take chances to be great. All I’m saying is this – that’s a good match up.

If our guys is 1 and 0 or 0 and 0 we’ll still take the fight, I’ll put the money up for both sides. He’s 17 and destined to be great. He was born ready.”

Though Mayweather’s statement has already garnered headlines, fans shouldn’t hold their breath in the hope of seeing Wood vs Moton just yet.

Wood’s focus will entirely be on the biggest fight of his career thus far, when he takes on former world champion Josh Warrington at the Sheffield Arena on October 7th.

In one of the biggest domestic match ups of the year, Wood and Warrington will lock horns to truly establish who Britain’s finest featherweight currently is.
