I felt like I wasn’t supposed to be in there. It was a learning experience. It showed me that’s not where I want to be. I got kids, I got to take care of, my family, friends and everything I’ve got to take care of… I’m fighting for my future, my kids’ future, my people’s future that’s coming behind me.

Prison can change any man, and it sounds like a month and a half played a role in reshaping Davis’ mindset. In December, Davis converted to Islam, another nod to his personal change.

Davis has stayed out of trouble in the lead-up to his fight against Frank Martin on June 15. Davis puts his WBA lightweight title on the line against the unbeaten 29-year-old with a lot to prove.

So if he getting there, act up, he gonna run into something. Or I might go get him.” 

Both men sound confident to end the clash via knockout. Amidst this banter between the two, Ryan Garcia has also stepped in to give his verdict on the subject.

However, it is still being looked at. So, for the time being, Garcia can consider it a win. Moving on, he even took to his X account and predicted who would get knocked out between Davis and Martin.

‘King Ryan’ wrote in a post, “I will bet 1 million that Gervonta will KO frank martin within 7 rounds I love frank but the truth is the truth”. Garcia also seized this opportunity to challenge Errol Spence Jr. for a battle. Coming back to the topic, Garcia believes Tank’s powerful blow would put Martin to sleep on the ground. Although Tank is the betting favorite, Martin has never been defeated in his professional career, and has an 18-0 record, with 12 knockouts. So, the fight can go either way.

2024 upcoming boxing schedule

Bouts with the best facing the best have become a rare occurrence in the sport of boxing, but one groundbreaking matchup might be on the horizon. Gervonta Davis is about to square off against Frank Martin on June 15. However, that’s not the fight that has piqued the interest among fans. Then which one is it? Well, it involves Ukrainian boxing star Vasyl Lomachenko!

See, the thing is ‘Loma’ defeated Australia’s George Kambosos Jr. just the other day, and that too, in an extremely destructive fashion. The performance from the Ukrainian seems to have caught ‘Tank’ Davis’ eye, as he hopped on social media to call for a potential fight in a now-deleted tweet. However, that wasn’t the case when Davis made his pro debut, as revealed by coach Calvin Ford in an interview with Fight Hype. But the Baltimore coach emphasized that things have changed and Davis has gotten a lot better.

Gervonta Davis is coming off a one-year-plus hiatus because of his hit-and-run case and is treating the Martin fight as nothing more than a tune-up fight for more serious opponents. However, the potential Lomachenko fight—that one seems serious for Davis. So, when the reporter asked Davis’ coach about the fight, Ford recollected Lomachenko’s second professional bout against Orlando Salido.

Ford said, after seeing that fight, “[Tank] said, ‘No, I ain’t messing with [that]’. And I said that—when we first turned pro with Floyd. Like, I ain’t messing with him…”. However, as Gervonta Davis started climbing the lightweight division’s ladder, defeating everyone who stood before him, Ford claims, “They said, ‘No, I don’t want to do that’.”

According to the Baltimore coach, Vasyl Lomachenko is among the top four boxers in the lightweight division. However, it’s unclear when this fight may transpire, despite Davis’ own desire for it. Regardless, the question now is, what does ‘Loma’ think about the fight against Davis?

Before the Ukrainian went down under to conquer Kambosos Jr. he had thrown hands with Davis’ biggest rival Devin Haney, a fight that saw ‘The Dream’ edge the results by a hair. While there were talks of a rematch, nothing seems to have materialized, so with Lomachenko’s latest win, Davis might be looking to one-up Haney by defeating ‘Loma’ by a mile.

However, defeating the Ukrainian boxer is no child’s play, as it became evident during the Kambosos Jr. fight. Nevertheless, hearing about Davis’ call out right after his win, Lomachenko said, “You know, during my boxing career I’ve never run around and I’ve always taken fights. After I rest a little bit, we can talk about the future.”

Calvin Ford is an elite coach, so if he says Gervonta Davis is ready for Vasyl Lomachenko, there’s not much to counter the statement, especially looking at Davis’ performances. However, Davis will have to defeat Frank Martin on June 15 to get to Lomachenko, which is yet to happen.

Gervonta Davis and David Benavidez are showing mutual respect ahead of their June 15 pay-per-view fights at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, where the pair of knockout artists will be featured in the main and co-main events, respectively.

Davis will face Frank Martin in the main event for the WBA lightweight title, while Benavidez will fight Oleksandr Gvozdyk in his debut in the light heavyweight division, with an interim WBC light heavyweight title on the line.

Benavidez (28-0, 24 KOs) expressed excitement about fighting as a co-featured combatant alongside one of the sport’s biggest names, Davis. The 27-year-old Benavidez has won all but four of his fights by knockout, including a stoppage of former two-division titleholder Demetrius Andrade in November.

“This is a dream come true for me,” Benavidez said at the press conference announcing the fight. “I have always wanted to fight on the same card as Gervonta Davis, and now that we’ve set it up, this is going to be the biggest card of the year.”

Gvozdyk (20-1, 16 KOs), the 37-year-old former light heavyweight titlist, retired after being stopped by Artur Beterbiev in 2019. He returned to the sport in 2023 and now, nearly a year and a half later, has landed a major bout.

Meanwhile, Davis (29-0, 27 KOs) was elevated to WBA lightweight titleholder after the previous titlist, Devin Haney, left the division and vacated the belt. Davis’ first test as champion will be against the 29-year-old Martin (18-0, 12 KOs), who is coached by Derrick James and has emerged as a force in the division after a dominant win over Michel Rivera in 2022.

For Davis, 29, who has won all but two of his fights by knockout, sharing the stage with another devastating power puncher is a thrill.

“I’m definitely excited to be on a card with someone like David Benavidez,” Davis said.

Davis, who last fought in April, knocking out Ryan Garcia in a highly successful pay-per-view, admitted that he didn’t realize how formidable a fighter Benavidez was until he saw him in action.

“I went to a David Benavidez fight when he fought Caleb Plant,” Davis said. “At first, I didn’t know he was one of those guys until I actually went to his fight and put the earphones on. I was close up.”

Ryan Garcia posted his appreciation to his former opponent, Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis, on social media for the support regarding the doping issues that have surrounded him following his last fight against Devin Haney on April 20.

Undefeated lightweight champion Davis defended Ryan (25-1, 20 KOs) on the X platform in response to his B-sample results allegedly testing positive for Ostarine doping.

Since then, Garcia‘s legal team stated that he had been given a hair follicle test, which came back negative for Ostarine.

The New York Athletic Commission, which will decide Garcia‘s case this summer, will have to take into account the results of the new tests.

Eddie Hearn still seems a little angry after what Garcia did to his fighter, Haney, last April, but he has to deal with it. Garcia won the fight and, if the New York State Athletic Commission clears him, he’ll be on top of the sport.

It has to be tough for Hearn, stuck with Haney, who is going nowhere and will probably lose his next fight when he defends his WBC light welterweight title, which he arguably should no longer hold after his loss to Garcia.
