The future stars of the sport are already honing their skills to take over the pro golf greens. Be it 15-year-old Miles Russell becoming the youngest player to make a cut on the Korn Ferry Tour or Kris Kim matching up Tiger Woods’ records from his junior golf days.
Now at the Adam Scott Junior Championship, two amateur golfers will be following in the footsteps of their legendary fathers, Tiger Woods and Trevor Immelman, who had competed together several times earlier, and will now have their offspring teeing off together. But who has better career statistics among the two rising stars?
Charlie Woods has participated in numerous tournaments and events, such as the 2020 PNC Championship. He also managed to win the Notah Begay Hill Junior Golf Championship’s regional qualifier, with his dad looping for him.
He grabbed the stated championship victory with his school being a part of the Benjamin Boys school team that won the Florida High School Athletic Association Class A state championship. This year, at the AJGA, Woods Jr. has only played one event so far (the Will Lowery Junior Championship in March). But he finished with a T32.
Jr. Woods then made it to the headlines for flirting with the pro greens of the PGA Tour at the pre-qualifier for the Cognizant Classic. He shot par on 11 holes but carded four bogeys and three double bogeys, with no birdies at all. This resulted in him getting a score of 16 over 86, and eventually, he could not qualify for the event and was heavily scrutinized by the audience. Charlie Woods gave a second shot to his PGA Tour dreams by making it to the US Open qualifier. However, he opened the round with a birdie, which was followed by four bogeys and three double bogeys, finishing with a score of 9-over, 81. He ranked 61 in the 74-player field, and only the top 5 were to qualify.
Jacob Immelman is set to play college golf at Clemson University. Immelman became one of the three signees of the Clemson head coach Jordan Byrd, with Colin Salema, and Rich Wills, in November of 2023. Before that, one of his noteworthy performances was at the 2020–2021 Florida Boys High School Golf Team Leaderboard Division – 1A, where he was ranked 14. He then participated in the US Kids 13–14 age group ever at Royal St. Cloud Golf Links in Orlando. In the ultimate round, he carded six birdies and finished the round with a 5-under, 67, grabbing a win by 4 strokes!
Immelman will be joining the Clemson Tigers after attaining 18 wins against top 100 competitions. Among these was the T24 finish at the Billy Horschel Junior Championship presented by Zurich. He started with three consecutive birdies on the first five holes and scored two more birdies, and one bogey for the first round. The second went pretty well too, with five birdies and a double bogey.
However, it was the ultimate round that dropped him down on the leaderboard. He opened the round with three consecutive bogeys, with a total of five of them, and just one birdie on the ninth hole and he carded a score of 4-over, 76. At the Arnold Palmer Invitational Junior in July, he finished with a T34.
According to the AJGA, Charlie Woods is currently ranked at 1510, with an average of 0.391 points accumulated so far. While Jacob Immelman is ranked at 968, with an average of 1.062 points accumulated this season. The stats stand pretty clear as to who is currently leading in the amateur career. But the tables can turn at any moment, given that the two of them are for the first time teeing off in the same field.
Will history be created at the Adam Scott Junior Championship?
Charlie Woods and Jacob Immelman, the sons of two legendary golfers, are competing in the same field at The Falls Club of the Palm Beaches Lake Worth in Florida. The junior championship kicked off on Wednesday, May 29. Charlie Woods opened the round with two consecutive bogeys and also carded a double bogey. However, after scoring four birdies, he managed to make it to the Top 25 for the moment, with a 73-over, 1 (T24).
Jacob Immelman, on the other hand, has dropped down to T39, opening the round with one and the only birdie of the round. He carded 3 bogeys on the back nine and a double bogey on the seventh hole. The two are once again paired up together for the Thursday round. Along with Jack McGrory, they will tee off at 8:23 am from the front nine.
For Trevor Immelman, who held off Tiger Woods at the 2008 Masters, it is going to be a great sight to witness. And not to forget Mr. T himself, proud to see his son on the golfing greens.
