Boxing legend Floyd Mayweather’s latest exhibition fight will take place against Victor Ortiz, who he controversially KO’d in 2011.
Mayweather retired from professional competition with a flawless record of 50-0 after stopping UFC legend Conor McGregor but has since been involved in several big million exhibition bouts. According to ESPN, the 47-year-old is now set to face Ortiz on August 24 at the Plaza de Toros Mexico in Mexico City, the largest bullring in the world.
Their first fight ended in controversy after Mayweather KO’d Ortiz with ‘cheap shots’. Ortiz was deducted a point after hitting Mayweather with an illegal headbutt, which prompted him to hug his rival seemingly in an attempt to apologise. Mayweather then hit Ortiz with two punches that took him by surprise, which led to the end of the fight.
Mayweather was then pressed about his sportsmanship, to which he responded: “In the ring, you have to protect yourself at all times. After it happened, we touched gloves and we were back to fighting and then I threw the left hook and right hand after the break. You just gotta protect yourself at all times.”
The boxing legend has taken part in seven exhibition fights since retiring from boxing, with his last outing against John Gotti III, the grandson of notorious mobster John Gotti, ending in an all-out brawl. Mayweather has also fought the likes of reality TV star Aaron Chalmers and YouTuber Logan Paul in un-scored bouts.
Mayweather has claimed he makes around $15-20million for all of his exhibition bouts, but his fight with Paul sold over one-million pay-per-view buys and saw him pocket a massive $65million. Ortiz, 37, retired from boxing two years ago with a professional record 33-7-3 after beating Todd Manuel in his last fight.
